Rules for burning Original Wax candles

How to get the most out of your candle?

You’ve just become the owner of one of our handcrafted soy candles? Wonderful! To ensure you fully enjoy your candle and make it last longer, here are some helpful tips:

1. Preparing for the first burn

Once you’ve received your candle, you’re ready to create a cozy atmosphere. Before lighting it for the first time, make sure the wick is trimmed to about 0.5-1 cm. This will allow the flame to melt the wax evenly, all the way to the edges of the jar.

Remember, the first burn should last at least 3-4 hours or until the entire surface of the wax has melted (this is called the "wax pool"). This will ensure an even burn in the future. Each subsequent burn should also last around 3 hours. Avoid lighting the candle if you know you’ll need to extinguish it soon – it’s worth waiting for the right moment.

2. Proper wick length

The wick length matters. We recommend trimming it to between 0.5 and 1 cm before each burn. This helps prevent issues such as a large flame, soot, faster wax consumption, or the jar overheating. If the wick is too short, the flame may not be strong enough to melt the wax properly, which can lead to tunneling (when the wax burns unevenly and stays stuck to the sides of the jar).

3. Where to place your candle?

To fully enjoy the fragrance of your candle, avoid placing it in drafts, near windows, in humid areas, or places with strong competing smells (e.g., in the kitchen). In such environments, the candle’s scent might be weaker or even unnoticeable.

4. Safety guidelines

Always remember safety! Avoid burning your candle near flammable items such as curtains, plants, or in areas accessible to children and pets. Candles should always be lit under adult supervision. When less than 1 cm of wax remains in the jar, it's time to say goodbye – burning it further could cause the jar to overheat or damage the surface it’s placed on.

5. How to extinguish your candle?

Instead of blowing out the flame, which can cause soot and an unpleasant smell, use a candle snuffer, available in our shop. Simply cut off the oxygen supply by placing the snuffer over the flame and holding it there for a moment. This will extinguish the candle without any smoke, allowing you to enjoy the scent longer.

Avoid using the metal lid to extinguish the flame – the smoke could seep into the melted wax, and when you light the candle again, you might be greeted by an unpleasant burnt smell.
